Congratulations to the NAIOP Chicago 2021-22 University Scholarship Recipients!

11.04.21

NAIOP Chicago is excited to introduce our 2021-22 University Scholarship recipients. These three students from DePaul, Marquette, and Roosevelt University exemplify the commitment and innovation coming from the new generation of Chicago’s commercial real estate industry and we are honored to play a role in fostering their professional development.

In addition to tuition assistance, recipients of the University Scholarship receive a one-year NAIOP membership, a mentor involved in a field related to their interests, as well as a variety of other local benefits. The NAIOP Chicago University Scholarship program is annual, with applications to the program accepted in early Summer of each year.  Read more about our University Scholarship program.

Angela Azmitia

Angela Azmitia is a Master of Science in Real Estate (MSRE) candidate at Roosevelt University. She currently works as a leasing agent and Chicago Housing Authority coordinator at Lathrop for the Related Companies. She holds a Master of Fine Arts (MFA) from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. Angela realized the importance of incorporating positive social impact into site-specific projects as a teaching artist on Chicago’s west side, and while working for Lathrop Homes, a public housing project turned mixed-income community. In her education, she is working towards understanding how affordable housing and community resources get factored into private sector negotiations. Angela plans to be able to advise developers, firms, and institutions on ways they can incorporate positive social impacts into their real estate projects. Through the NAIOP Chicago University Scholarship, she wants to grow her network, gain insider knowledge on best practices related to development, investment, and impact, and desires to strengthen commercial real estate’s commitment to affordable housing.

George Haikal

George is a full-time undergraduate student at Marquette University in Milwaukee, WI where he is studying Commercial Real Estate, Marketing, and Sales. As an early teen, George began working construction and manual labor jobs that exposed him to active sites and developments. While this work may be unappealing to some, George enjoyed getting first-hand experience in the real estate industry from the ground level, which sparked his interest in creating physical value through real estate. Last summer, he completed an internship for a property management firm and currently works in a sales position where he has generated over 2m dollars in revenue. This summer he will be interning with JLL in Chicago. Through the NAIOP Chicago University Scholarship, he hopes to build and sustain long-lasting connections with NAIOP members as well as learn from their knowledge and experience.

Cody Powell

Cody is a Masters in Real Estate (MSRE) candidate at DePaul University. He currently works as an Associate Project Manager at JLL, where he works on the Relocation team. While working in design, Cody realized he was much more analytically driven than most designers, leading to his interest in development. In the future, he hopes to open his own investment/development firm with the goal of leveraging investor capital to grow a portfolio of properties that represent quality design, strong financials and ethical practices. By receiving support, mentorship and membership, through the NAIOP Chicago University Scholarship, Cody hopes to gain valuable skills to achieve these goals and provide opportunities to contribute to the industry.
